Worn Teeth
Worn Teeth: Causes and Treatment Options
Tooth wear is a common condition that develops gradually, often going unnoticed until significant changes in appearance, sensitivity or function occur. Worn teeth can make your smile appear aged and can compromise the long-term health of your bite. At our practice, we carefully assess the underlying causes to provide talored, lasting solutions.
Tooth wear generally occurs through one or more of the following mechanisms: attrition, erosion and abrasion. Attrition is the mechanical wear caused by grinding or clenching, a habit known as bruxism. This can flatten the biting surfaces, crack teeth and create muscle or jaw discomfort. Erosion results from acids that dissolve enamel—often linked to dietary choices, gastric reflux, or certain medical conditions. Abrasion is wear caused by external factors, such as overly hard brushing or abrasive toothpaste, and typically affects the necks of the teeth.
The first step in managing tooth wear is to identify its source. A comprehensive dental examination, bite analysis and sometimes digital records help determine how your teeth are functioning and where the damage is originating. Addressing the cause is essential to prevent further deterioration. This may involve protective measures such as an occlusal splint for night-time grinding, dietary advice to reduce acid exposure, or adjustments to brushing techniques.
Once the underlying issue is controlled, we can focus on restoring the teeth. Treatment varies depending on the extent of wear and may include conservative approaches such as composite bonding to rebuild lost structure, or more durable options like ceramic veneers and crowns to restore strength, aesthetics and function. In advanced cases, a full bite rehabilitation may be recommended to re-establish a stable, harmonious smile.
With early diagnosis and the right treatment plan, worn teeth can be effectively managed and beautifully restored. Our goal is to protect your long-term oral health while enhancing the comfort and appearance of your smile.
