The type of restoration we recommend depends on how much tooth structure has been lost, where the tooth is in the mouth, the forces placed upon it and the condition of the remaining tooth.

Composite Fillings

Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material that is bonded directly to the tooth. It is particularly useful for small to moderate restorations and allows us to repair many teeth conservatively.

Composite restorations can be used to:

Repair teeth affected by decay
Replace old or failing fillings
Restore small fractures and chips
Rebuild areas affected by wear
Improve the shape or appearance of a tooth where appropriate

Composite is available in different shades and translucencies, allowing the restoration to be carefully matched to the surrounding natural tooth.

Bonded Ceramic Restorations

When more tooth structure has been lost, a directly placed filling may not always provide the most predictable long-term solution.

In appropriate situations, we may recommend a custom-made bonded ceramic restoration, sometimes referred to as an inlay, onlay or partial crown.

Rather than covering the entire tooth unnecessarily, a bonded ceramic restoration can often be designed to replace and protect the damaged portion of the tooth while preserving healthy remaining structure.

Choosing the Right Restoration

There isn’t one restorative material that is best for every tooth.

A small cavity may require a relatively simple composite filling. A larger damaged tooth may benefit from bonded ceramic, while a tooth with extensive structural loss may be better protected with a crown.

Our approach is to use the most conservative treatment that we believe will provide a predictable result, taking into account the condition of the tooth, your bite, appearance and long-term prognosis.

Wherever possible, our priority is to preserve your natural tooth rather than remove healthy structure simply to accommodate a particular type of restoration.
