At Station St Dental, we offer both in-chair professional whitening and dentist-supervised take-home whitening using custom-made trays. The most appropriate approach depends on your teeth, the result you are hoping to achieve and whether you prefer treatment in the practice or more gradual whitening at home.

For patients whose main concern is tooth colour, whitening is often worth considering before more involved aesthetic dental treatment.

How Does Tooth Whitening Work?

Whitening gels penetrate the tooth and lighten pigments that have accumulated within the tooth structure over time.

Teeth naturally become darker as we age, and their colour can also be influenced by factors such as tea, coffee, red wine, smoking and other dietary or lifestyle habits.

The degree of improvement varies between individuals and depends partly on the original colour and nature of the discolouration.

In-Chair Tooth Whitening

In-chair whitening allows us to carry out the whitening procedure within the practice using professional-strength whitening products while carefully protecting the surrounding gums and soft tissues.

The main advantage is speed. A significant amount of whitening can be achieved during a single appointment rather than progressively over a number of days at home.

In-chair whitening can be a good option for patients who would prefer the treatment to be completed for them or who would like to achieve a lighter tooth colour relatively quickly.

Take-Home Tooth Whitening

For take-home whitening, we use a digital scan to create custom-made trays that fit closely over your teeth.

The trays hold a small amount of professional whitening gel against the teeth while minimising contact with the surrounding gums. We will show you how much gel to use, how to place the trays and how long to wear them.

Whitening takes place gradually over a period of days or weeks, giving you considerable control over the final result.

The trays can also be retained for future maintenance whitening when appropriate.

Which Type of Whitening Is Better?

Neither approach is necessarily better for everyone.

Some patients prefer the convenience and speed of in-chair treatment. Others prefer the gradual control and flexibility of whitening at home.

In some situations, in-chair and take-home whitening can be used together, particularly when ongoing maintenance of the result is desired.

We can discuss the advantages and limitations of each approach after examining your teeth.

Will Whitening Affect Fillings, Crowns or Veneers?

Whitening changes the colour of natural tooth structure but does not whiten existing dental restorations such as composite fillings, ceramic crowns or veneers.

This is particularly important when restorations are present on visible front teeth.

If you are considering other aesthetic dental treatment, whitening is often carried out first so that any new restorations can subsequently be matched to the lighter tooth colour.

Does Tooth Whitening Cause Sensitivity?

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during or following whitening.

The likelihood and degree of sensitivity varies between individuals and can usually be managed by modifying the whitening regimen or using appropriate desensitising strategies.

Examining your teeth before whitening also allows us to identify decay, cracks, exposed root surfaces or failing restorations that may influence whether whitening is appropriate.

How Long Does Whitening Last?

Whitening isn’t permanent. Teeth will gradually darken again over time as part of normal ageing and exposure to foods, drinks and other factors.

Patients with custom-made trays can often use them for occasional maintenance whitening following our advice, rather than repeating the entire treatment.

A Conservative Approach to a Brighter Smile

Not every aesthetic concern requires restorative dentistry.

If tooth colour is the main concern, professional whitening can often provide a worthwhile improvement without removing or altering healthy tooth structure.

If whitening alone won’t address what concerns you — for example where tooth shape, position, wear or existing restorations are involved — we can discuss whether another approach, or a combination of treatments, would be more appropriate.
