Extractions and Minor Oral Surgery
Extractions & Minor Oral Surgery
At Station St Dental, we undertake routine dental extractions and selected surgical extractions within the practice. More complex cases are referred to experienced specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeons, with specialist treatment available locally when appropriate.
When Might a Tooth Need to Be Removed?
Extraction may be considered when a tooth is:
- Extensively cracked or fractured
- Too structurally compromised to restore predictably
- Severely affected by decay
- Associated with infection that cannot reasonably be managed by other treatment
- Significantly affected by periodontal disease
- Problematic as part of an orthodontic or broader treatment plan
- Otherwise considered to have a poor or unpredictable long-term prognosis
The decision to remove a tooth isn’t made simply because it has a problem. Where appropriate, we will discuss whether the tooth can reasonably be retained and the advantages, limitations and prognosis of the available options.
Routine and Surgical Extractions
Many teeth can be removed relatively simply under local anaesthesia.
Other teeth may be broken, heavily restored or have root anatomy or positioning that requires a minor surgical approach. We undertake selected surgical extractions at Station St Dental, also under local anaesthesia, following appropriate clinical and radiographic assessment.
Before treatment, we will explain what is involved and what you can expect during and after the procedure.
Keeping You Comfortable
We understand that having a tooth removed can make some patients apprehensive.
Local anaesthesia is used to make the area comfortable before treatment begins, and we take a calm, unhurried approach throughout the procedure.
For appropriate patients who would benefit from additional help managing dental anxiety, nitrous oxide and oxygen inhalation sedation (“happy gas”) may also be available.
Other forms of sedation may sometimes be considered following an individual assessment of the patient’s health, anxiety and proposed treatment. We can discuss the appropriate options with you during your consultation.
When We Recommend Specialist Care
Not every extraction is best undertaken in a general dental practice.
The position of the tooth, root anatomy, relationship to surrounding structures, medical considerations and anticipated surgical complexity all influence where treatment is most appropriately performed.
When we believe specialist management is preferable, we work closely with specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeons and can coordinate referral and appropriate imaging.
Specialist surgical treatment can often be undertaken locally in Bowral, including under general anaesthesia when appropriate, avoiding the need for many Southern Highlands patients to travel to Sydney for treatment.
This is particularly relevant to wisdom teeth, which we generally assess at Station St Dental before referring for specialist removal when indicated.
What Happens After an Extraction?
We will provide instructions on caring for the area following treatment and explain what to expect during healing.
Where removal leaves a space that may affect function or appearance, we can also discuss whether the tooth should be replaced and, if so, the available options.
Depending on the situation, these may include:
- A dental implant
- A bridge
- A removable partial denture
- Occasionally, leaving the space untreated
The best option depends on the location of the missing tooth, the surrounding teeth, your bite and your individual priorities.
Careful Assessment Before Treatment
Extraction is irreversible, so the decision deserves appropriate consideration.
Our approach is to determine whether the tooth genuinely needs to be removed, whether it can reasonably be retained, and where the procedure can most appropriately be carried out.
When extraction is the right treatment, our aim is to make the process as straightforward and comfortable as possible and to provide a clear plan for what comes afterwards.
