Preventative Dental Care & Hygiene

Preventative Dental Care & Hygiene

Good dentistry isn’t only about treating problems when they occur. Regular preventative care gives us the opportunity to maintain healthy teeth and gums, identify changes early and reduce the likelihood of more complex treatment becoming necessary.

At Station St Dental, preventative care is tailored to the individual. Your dental history, gum health, existing restorations, risk of decay and other factors all influence what care you need and how frequently we recommend seeing you.

Regular Dental Examinations

A comprehensive dental examination involves more than simply looking for cavities.

Depending on your individual circumstances, we assess:

  • The health of your teeth and gums
  • Existing fillings, crowns, bridges and implants
  • Signs of decay or structural deterioration
  • Cracks, fractures and tooth wear
  • Changes in the bite
  • Areas of gum recession
  • Periodontal health
  • The soft tissues of the mouth
  • Any symptoms or changes you have noticed

Digital X-rays may be recommended when they provide information that cannot be obtained from the clinical examination alone.

The purpose is not to find treatment to do. It is to understand what has changed, identify problems that genuinely require attention and monitor those that don’t.

Professional Cleaning and Hygiene Care

Even with excellent brushing and interdental cleaning at home, plaque and calculus can accumulate in areas that are difficult to reach.

Professional hygiene care allows us to remove these deposits and assess how effectively different areas of the mouth are being maintained.

Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • Removal of plaque and calculus
  • Professional cleaning and polishing
  • Air polishing where appropriate
  • Assessment of gum health
  • Fluoride treatment when indicated
  • Individual advice about brushing and interdental cleaning

Our aim isn’t simply to leave your teeth feeling clean. Preventative appointments provide an opportunity to maintain healthy gums and identify changes before they become more significant.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Check-Up and Clean?

There isn’t one interval that is appropriate for everyone.

Some patients with excellent oral health and a low risk of dental disease may require relatively infrequent care. Others benefit from more regular review because of periodontal disease, a higher risk of decay, extensive existing dentistry or other individual factors.

We recommend an appointment interval based on your individual risk and dental history rather than automatically applying the same six-month schedule to every patient.

Maintaining Existing Dental Work

Preventative care becomes particularly important for patients who have accumulated more extensive dentistry over time.

Crowns, bridges, dental implants, bonded ceramic restorations and large fillings all require ongoing assessment and maintenance.

Regular examinations allow us to monitor the restorations themselves as well as the teeth, gums and bite around them. Identifying a developing problem early can sometimes allow a relatively conservative repair rather than replacement of an entire restoration.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is influenced by more than how well you brush.

Dietary habits, frequency of sugar and carbohydrate exposure, saliva, fluoride exposure, dry mouth, medications and previous history of decay can all influence individual risk.

Where appropriate, we can help identify these factors and recommend practical strategies to reduce the likelihood of future disease.

For patients at increased risk, preventative measures may include fluoride treatment or other individually appropriate strategies.

Healthy Gums

Bleeding or inflamed gums shouldn’t simply be accepted as normal.

At regular preventative appointments, we assess the gums for signs of inflammation and periodontal disease. Where more detailed periodontal assessment or treatment is required, this can be incorporated into an individual periodontal management plan.

Early identification is particularly valuable because periodontal disease can sometimes progress with relatively few symptoms.

Prevention Changes Throughout Life

Dental risk isn’t static.

Children, young adults, patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, people with extensive restorative dentistry and older adults can all have very different preventative needs.

Changes in general health, medications, diet, dexterity and saliva can also alter dental risk over time.

For that reason, our recommendations may change as your circumstances change.

Maintaining Your Teeth for the Long Term

The most successful dental treatment is often the treatment that never becomes necessary.

Regular examination, appropriate professional hygiene care and good home maintenance give us the best opportunity to identify problems early, preserve healthy natural tooth structure and maintain existing dentistry.

Our aim at Station St Dental is not simply to treat dental disease, but to help our patients keep their teeth healthy, functional and comfortable for as long as possible.
