What Is a Digital Dental Scan?

An intraoral scanner is a small handheld device that captures thousands of images of your teeth and combines them to create a detailed three-dimensional digital model.

The scan appears on screen as it is taken, allowing us to examine your teeth and bite from different angles and discuss what we can see with you.

For many procedures, digital scanning can replace traditional dental impressions, avoiding the need for trays of impression material in the mouth.

Monitoring Changes Over Time

One of the less obvious advantages of digital scanning is the ability to create an accurate record of your teeth at a particular point in time.

Where appropriate, future scans can be compared with earlier records to help us identify changes such as tooth wear, movement or alterations to the bite.

This can be particularly useful when deciding whether something simply needs to be monitored or whether treatment should be considered.

Digital Planning, Clinical Judgement

Digital scanning provides us with extremely useful information, but technology doesn’t make treatment decisions.

We consider digital information alongside your dental history, clinical examination, X-rays when required, photographs and, most importantly, our clinical assessment.
