What Is an Occlusal Splint?
An occlusal splint – often referred to as a grinding guard – is a customised dental appliance worn over the upper or lower teeth. It is typically fabricated from durable acrylic or modern 3D-printed nylon and is generally worn overnight, with additional daytime use when necessary. A digital 3D scan is taken of your teeth to make the splint.
These appliances play an important role in dental care and are used for various purposes. Their primary function is to shield the teeth from the effects of grinding and clenching (bruxism).
Unchecked grinding can lead to significant tooth wear, fractures, jaw discomfort and muscle tension. An occlusal splint helps minimise these issues by providing a protective surface for the teeth to bite against, reducing stress on your natural tooth structure.
Splints are also commonly advised following major dental treatments, such as for teeth with extensive restorations or to protect new crowns and veneers.
There may be a connection between nighttime grinding habits and sleep apnoea. If you snore, experience disturbed sleep, or have other sleep-related concerns, it can be worthwhile to discuss a sleep assessment with us before your splint is made. It is also important to ensure your teeth are thoroughly examined prior to having a splint fabricated.
