For some patients, living with a conventional complete lower denture can be frustrating.

Unlike an upper denture, which can often gain useful retention from the palate, a lower denture has much less surface area for support and must compete for space with the tongue and surrounding muscles. As the jaw changes following tooth loss, keeping a lower denture stable can become increasingly difficult.

For suitable patients, a small number of dental implants, usually two can make a significant difference.

What Is an Implant-Retained Lower Denture?

An implant-retained lower denture remains removable, but instead of relying entirely on the gums for stability, it attaches securely to dental implants placed in the lower jaw.

The implants provide attachment points that help prevent the denture from lifting or moving excessively during everyday function.

The denture can still be removed by the patient for cleaning and maintenance.

Assessment and Planning

Before recommending treatment, we assess the existing denture, gums, jaw, bite and available bone.

Digital scanning and appropriate imaging may form part of the planning process. We also consider whether the existing denture can be adapted or whether a new denture would provide a better result.

Where implant placement is required, we coordinate the surgical and restorative stages of treatment with the clinicians involved in your care.

Designed to Be Maintained

One advantage of a removable implant-retained denture is accessibility for cleaning.

The denture is removed for daily cleaning, allowing both the denture and implant attachments to be cared for properly. The attachments themselves are subject to wear and may require periodic maintenance or replacement as part of normal ongoing care.

We continue to monitor the implants, surrounding tissues, attachments, fit of the denture and bite at your regular dental visits.
