Children’s Dentistry
Children’s Dentistry
At Station St Dental, we take a gentle and unhurried approach to children’s dentistry. We want children to become comfortable visiting the dentist, understand how to look after their teeth and develop a positive relationship with dental care from an early age.
When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?
We encourage children to become familiar with the dental environment from a young age. Early visits are often simple and relaxed, giving your child an opportunity to meet us and become accustomed to having their teeth examined.
As children grow, regular dental visits allow us to monitor not only the health of their teeth and gums, but also the development of their teeth, jaws and bite.
Preventative Dental Care for Children
Depending on your child’s age and individual needs, their dental care may include:
- Regular dental examinations
- Professional cleaning when appropriate
- Fluoride treatment
- Fissure sealants to protect vulnerable teeth
- Digital X-rays when clinically indicated
- Monitoring the development and position of adult teeth
- Assessment of the developing bite
- Custom-made sports mouthguards
- Advice about brushing, fluoride toothpaste and diet
As with adults, we don’t believe every child requires exactly the same treatment or appointment schedule. Recommendations are based on their individual dental health, development and risk factors.
Helping Anxious Children Feel More Comfortable
Some children naturally feel apprehensive about dental treatment. We take the time to explain things in an age-appropriate way and allow children to become comfortable with us at their own pace.
For children who need some additional help to relax, we can also offer nitrous oxide and oxygen inhalation sedation, commonly known as “happy gas”, when appropriate. It can help reduce anxiety while allowing the child to remain awake and responsive throughout their treatment.
Sedation isn’t necessary for every anxious child, and we’ll discuss whether it is appropriate as part of their individual care.
Building Healthy Habits Early
Prevention is an important part of children’s dentistry. We work with both children and parents to provide practical advice about brushing, diet and caring for developing teeth at home.
Just as importantly, we try to make dental visits calm, positive and age-appropriate. Taking the time to build trust when children are young can make dental care much easier for them throughout their lives.
If your child requires treatment beyond what is appropriate in a general dental setting, we can also discuss referral to a specialist paediatric dentist when necessary.
