A thorough dental examination tells us a great deal, but not everything can be seen by looking at the teeth and gums alone. Digital X-rays allow us to see areas that aren’t visible during a clinical examination, helping us diagnose problems accurately and plan treatment appropriately.

At Station St Dental, we use digital dental imaging when it is clinically indicated — not simply as a routine procedure at every appointment.

Why Are Dental X-Rays Needed?

Depending on the individual situation, dental X-rays can help us assess:

Decay between teeth or beneath existing restorations
The roots of teeth and surrounding bone
Dental infections and areas of inflammation
Bone levels and periodontal health
Impacted or unerupted teeth
Existing crowns, fillings, implants and other dental work
Changes that may need to be monitored over time

X-rays can also provide important information when investigating dental pain, planning more complex treatment or assessing a tooth that has been damaged.

How Often Do I Need Dental X-Rays?

There is no single X-ray schedule that is appropriate for everyone.

The type and frequency of dental X-rays we recommend depends on your individual circumstances, including your dental history, risk of decay or gum disease, existing restorations, symptoms and previous imaging.

If you have healthy teeth and a low risk of dental disease, X-rays may be required relatively infrequently. Patients with more complex dental needs may benefit from imaging more often.

Modern digital dental X-rays use a low radiation dose and produce detailed images that can be viewed immediately. This allows us to examine areas of concern closely and, importantly, show you what we can see.

We believe diagnostic information should support careful clinical judgement rather than replace it. X-rays are therefore considered alongside your examination, dental history and any symptoms before we recommend treatment.
