Cracked Teeth
What Is a Cracked Tooth?
Cracks can differ in size, depth, and position, all of which influence how the tooth functions and how serious the issue becomes.
Cracked Tooth Syndrome describes situations where a tooth crack causes pain—often difficult to pinpoint and challenging to treat. Early intervention is recommended to prevent the tooth from reaching this stage.
Types of Cracked Teeth
Tooth cracks generally fall into the following categories:
Craze Lines
Tiny, surface-level cracks in the enamel. They are usually harmless and do not cause pain
Fractured Cusp
A corner or section of the tooth breaks off.
- Can cause discomfort, especially when the tongue rubs against it
- May cause mild sensitivity
- If the fracture is large, it may involve the pulp and lead to toothache
Cracked Tooth
A crack that travels from the enamel down toward the root without extending beyond it.
- If untreated, it can lead to tooth loss or the need for a root canal
Complex Fracture
Similar to a cracked tooth, but the fracture extends into the pulp (nerve), typically resulting in significant pain.
Split Tooth
A severe fracture where the crown of the tooth separates into two or more segments.
- Extraction is the only treatment option
Vertical Root Fracture
A break that runs through the root itself.
- Also requires extraction
Common Causes of Cracked Teeth
- Grinding or Clenching (Bruxism)
The most frequent cause. Excessive pressure from grinding or clenching can weaken and eventually crack a tooth. - Large Fillings
Teeth with extensive restorations may be more prone to fractures. - Missing Teeth
Gaps can place extra stress on remaining teeth, increasing the risk of cracks. - Trauma
A sudden impact or injury to the mouth. - Hard Foods
Chewing items like ice, nuts, or hard lollies can lead to chipping or cracking.
