TMJ is the abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint, the hinge-like joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull through a small, flat cartilage disc known as the articular disc.

When people refer to “TMJ pain,” they are usually describing TMD, which stands for temporomandibular joint disorder — the term dentists use to diagnose issues affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.

Causes of Jaw Joint (TMD) Pain
